The RideSafeUM project website has just launched. This online space hosts all the key information about the project, its aim, its partners and the upcoming pilot tests in Barcelona, Rome and Thessaloniki. RideSafeUM is an initiative co-funded by EIT Urban Mobility, a European initiative supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and co-funded by the European Union.
The main objectives of the project are to proactively improve micromobility safety through better provision of information to users, easy update of regulations for cities and operators, smooth reaction in case of accident and data analysis for learning, policy-making and management purposes.
The solution designed within the project will be based on the integration of computer-vision software, GPS and accelerometer information. This technology will be supported by users’ smartphones and also by integrated equipment on the operator’s fleet. In addition, a city dashboard will enable authorities to identify and dynamically manage micromobility safety issues. Real-time information (via an app or the operator’s front-end) of regulations will be displayed to the user, and safety warnings will be enabled. At the same time, alerts will be sent to the authorities if an accident occurs, using a black-box function.
The consortium developing the work for this project, led by CARNET, is composed of a varied array of partners from the public, private and academic sectors. Involved public authorities include Ajuntament de Barcelona –with technological support from Institut Municipal d’Informàtica (IMI) –, Roma Mobilità and Thessaloniki Major Development Agency. Private sector partners include micromobility operators Dott and Thessbike, as well as consulting and technology companies like Applus IDIADA, BRAINBOX and FACTUAL. Finally, academic and research-related entities complete the mix with players like Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) as well as Universistat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
Pilot tests for the project will take place from September to December 2022. In Barcelona, pilot tests will be undertaken relying on the participation of users of privately-owned bicycles and e-scooters. In Rome, the trials will be supported by Dott and their fleet of shared e-scooters. Finally, in Thessaloniki, the tests will be run with Thessbike, relying on their fleet of shared bicycles and e-scooters. Visit the website for more details on how to participate!
